Tess
An original staged production of Schubert's Winterreise within the story of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles.
In this production we take Schubert’s Winterreise, a song cycle traditionally performed by male voices, and funnel this through the female perspective of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

Creative Team
Ben Fleming - Associate Director
Ben studied at Edinburgh University before training at Mountview in Theatre Directing. He has spent the past 7 years working closely with playwrights to develop ambitious new plays at Greenwich Theatre, Marylebone Theatre, the Union Theatre, the Pen Theatre and BBC Radio Scotland. He co-founded queer theatre collective Three Pound Coin and recently led the London community programme for the Royal Society of Arts.
Ben likes making work that has a point of view, demands hope and insists on kindness. Tess marks his second venture into opera-making, and he’s delighted to join the Curious Opera team.
Lauren Pountney - Assistant Producer
Lauren is a choreographer and creative based in London. Trained primarily in classical ballet and contemporary dance, she began to focus on choreography and movement direction in 2019, graduating with a MA in Choreography from Trinity Laban Conservatoire in 2021. She creates across a variety of mediums including photography, film, and live stage work. Her creative process focuses on the benefits of collaboration and agency, while providing a strong framework in which to explore and experiment.
She is very excited to be joining the Curious Opera team on this production of Tess, her first staged opera work.
